Self-condemnation. It was my main course. Throw in Self-condemnation. It was my main course. Throw in a side of shame, add some disappointment for dessert, and you have the full meal deal. . I felt stuck. Frustrated with myself for resorting to the same futile patterns. . Self-condemnation sounded a lot like this: If only I was more patient. I need to pray more. I need to read my Bible more. I need to be a better wife, a better mom, a better friend. Try harder. Get it right. What's wrong with me? Be more like ______. I'm ruining my kids. I'm too lazy. . When I understood that there was a reason, a story, behind every single one of my reactions, I was able to name the deeper feelings that were fueling my emotions, and it took away some of its power. . Don't get me wrong. This is ongoing! I'm in process. Growing. Becoming more kind to myself. Slowing down. Making sense of what I'm feeling in the moment. Rewiring my default. Chapters I would have rather ripped out, removed entirely. . There came a point where I was more afraid of living in the same hindered existence than I was of revisiting those parts of myself. . Part of Story-work is about revisiting those formative experiences and allowing yourself to receive now, what you needed in that moment past. . A voice to speak up. . Compassion and empathy. .
