I’m counting down the days until our new chicks I’m counting down the days until our new chicks come ! I’m equally excited to receive our incubator in the mail.
.
Last year we brought home some beautiful Rhode Island Red chickens. I saved a friendly rooster (remember all those other ones that chased me screaming out of the coop?).
.
Just waiting to hatch out some purebred Rhode Island Reds as we all as some Black Stars.
.
Curious as to why these chickens are one of the most popular choices among homesteaders ? Check out my post ‘Is the Rhode Island Red a Friend or a Foe?’
.
Spoiler: Let’s just say, don’t get on their bad side. Is there such thing as an alpha chicken ? #rhodeislandred #backyardchickens #canadianhomesteading
It’s a new experience butchering animals on our It’s a new experience butchering animals on our homestead. Animals that we have lovingly cared for, animals that are often more pets than anything else.
.
We mourn the loss of our animal, but celebrate the bounty and provision they bring to our family.
.
It’s not wrong to be sad and cry. It’s not wrong to get to attached.
.
It is different though. We’ve been very detached from our food source this past generation. It’s hard work to rebuild.

I was mad!
.
Unfortunately, I was taking it out on the one person closest to me, my husband. I was irritable and annoyed, hopeless and frustrated.
.
I thought we had a goal, I thought we had a plan.
.
I have experienced the hopelessness of being stuck.
.
I have experienced the thrill of focus, determination, and overcoming.

How I found contentment crammed in a small house. How I found contentment crammed in a small house.
.
Discontentment can overpower thought and reason; crowding out any recollection of peace or happiness; honing in on escape, rather than cost.
.
It drains colour and fuels contempt.
.
I have found myself stuck here, more than once.
.
Visit the blog to hear how we built contentment even when our situation didn’t change. #smallhouselife #debtfreecommunity #debtfreejourney
Talking about chicks, roosters, and the straight r Talking about chicks, roosters, and the straight run.
.
PS. Nice roosters do exist. We currently have three very nice roosters.
.
It may or may not have included us butchering all of the roosters that chased and attacked me every time I went into the chicken coop….
.
Ya’ll know I screamed and ran away every time.
.
Teenager roosters are scary too, don’t be fooled by their patchy feathers. #canadianhomesteader #saskatchewanhomesteader #chickenfarmer
